People sometimes ask what’s my favorite type of photo session. I honestly don’t know if I could decide, but one thing is for sure–cake smash photo sessions are really high on the list! And this one, with its stars and moon theme and beyond cute little birthday boy, was so much fun!
I start most of my cake smash photo sessions without the cake. Before things get too messy I like to do some straight-up baby portraits. One year (which is when most people schedule their little one’s cake smash) is a big milestone. The perfect time to get pictures of those chubby cheeks and toothy grins before they get covered in frosting.
Because we were doing a moon and stars theme for this one, we thought pajamas were in order for at least a few of our shots. Doesn’t he look adorable in his onesie? I think I need to incorporate PJs into more of my baby pictures!
And of course, for little boys, it doesn’t get much cuter than a bow tie and suspenders.
Once I’ve gotten a nice selection of milestone baby pictures, it’s time to move on to the cake smash portion of our session. Always a little tough to know how baby will react. Some babies love the sugar burst, and others aren’t sure what to make of it. This birthday boy was cautious, but still managed to get a nice frosting face.
And what’s the perfect way to end a cake smash photo session? Tub time! Once this young man was done with his cake, I got out my little bathtub and gave him a chance to splash around in the bubbles and warm water. Look at that casual pose and squeaky clean face.
