Having a baby is a joyous and sunny time in a family’s life.  Unfortunately, sometimes life brings a storm and there is a tragic loss of these new little souls. Like the miracle of a rainbow after a storm, many mothers refer to babies born after loss as their rainbow babies. The rainbow doesn’t take away the storm, nor does the arrival of a new baby erase the tragedy of previous loss, but gives families hope of what’s to come. Having a Rainbow Newborn Session with their new baby can be a wonderful way to celebrate their newest addition, while remembering what made this birth so special.

After the storm – Rainbow Newborn Session Bucks County PA | Doylestown PA Newborn Photographer

My client had the tremendous loss of losing both her twin newborn sons – one at a few days old and the other at a month old.  I could only imagine the pain and sadness this must have caused her and her family.  Joyfully, she became pregnant with her rainbow baby, a beautiful baby girl.  I had the honor of photographing this Rainbow Newborn Session with this amazing and brave family. When she came for her newborn session and told me their story, I decided I had to gift them something because their story touched me so much. I decided to gift them an extra long session to give them as many photos as I could, to capture their new little love and their beautiful family.

They wanted to remember their two sons that they lost and incorporate them into these special photos with their daughter Emerson.  I decided to pose her in my antique, white bed and have her hold two little, blue hearts representing her two brothers. How beautiful does she look in white, like a little sleeping angel hugging those two sweet souls. I love that I was able to give them such meaningful photos after their loss.

Beautiful Rainbow

Emerson was a great baby to photograph. She was not a great sleeper, but we managed to do everything her mama dreamed of.  I always like to consult with my clients about colors for their session, and where they would like finished photos hung in their home, so I can coordinate with the outfits and props that I use. My clients wanted to use a lot of white in her set-ups, so I happily obliged. Emerson looked so cute in my white, knit hat with the lace trim from Pooks & LuLu.  I love the little face she made while she slept. I also have an extensive collection of white headbands, which I used in her photos. Nothing’s sweeter than a little newborn baby wearing just a headband.

The weather was nice, so we were able to do some set-ups outside. I loved using my antique wooden bucket as a prop. Layering it with many white blankets added such wonderful texture to the photos. She looked so precious sleeping in the rustic bucket surrounded by all the rocks. I love when I’m able to do something different with my set-ups and it’s even better when my clients love the resulting photos. For other posing and prop ideas, please check out my Newborn Gallery.

Together as a Family

Family photos with their little one was so important to mom so we did a lot of them. These felt even more special because of everything this family has been through. I love posing families skin on skin. These’s something about the newness of those tiny babies against the warm skin of their parents that always makes for a beautiful photo.

This pose with the dad was a significant photo. After the loss of his sons, he had their names tattooed on the inside of his arm, along with a hand and foot print. Having him pose with his new baby girl on his arm while showing off his memorial tattoo was an emotional photo. It’s one I know that they will cherish. This was such a special Rainbow Newborn Session for me. My wish is that my clients know how much I care, in the beautiful photos in their gallery. I hope that they show the love they have for their little girl and their two little loves who will always be part of their family.
