This newborn baby girl was so sweet. She gave me the biggest smile in the froggy pose. Getting a smile from a newborn while in that pose is like winning the lottery for a newborn photographer. Most newborns love this pose and a lot of them fall asleep in this pose as long as their bellies are full. I have been a newborn photographer for 5 years now and newborn photography still amazes me. I love how every baby is different and not every baby will do every pose. Some babies like being on their tummy and some love being on their backs. Some babies only like to be swaddled and some are just chill. This sweet baby girl was happy, smiley, and chill. One of my favorites!

It has taken me a while to come up with this post. I have been trying to find the right words to explain what we have gone through but no words can quite describe it so I will just have to try my best.

My daughter has hip dysplasia. She was diagnosed when she was 2 months old and I was heartbroken. Apparently, it is in our family and I had no idea. Infant hip dysplasia is developmental and is also called a dislocated hip. Her hip did not develop completely so it was more prone to dislocation. She did not display any signs of pain and I was in shock. I blamed myself, I went over every single thing I did or did not do. Did I cause this? Eventually, I came to terms with it and I know it wasn’t my fault.

She had to wear a full body brace 24/7 for 14 weeks. It might not seem that long but it was the longest 14 weeks of my life. When we went into the doctor’s office to put it on her, I was sobbing. She screamed the entire time and I felt horrible that she had to wear this thing that looked so uncomfortable. Although, after a few days, she got used it it. She felt no pain and was still her happy self. I on the other hand took a lot longer to get used to it.

Nursing was difficult as I could only position her one way. She could not have a bath, the one thing that she loved before bedtime, and I had to sponge bathe her. Sponge bathing her took about 30mins every day. Everytime she spit up or it something got on her outfit, it would take another 30min to change her. It was a very tedious and arduous process and I was mentally and physically tired but I knew it had to be done.

It was one of the happiest days of my life when they told us we could remove the brace 14 weeks later. The funny thing was, she didn’t even notice that it was off. When I finally put her in the bathtub, she screamed the whole time. She had forgotten what a bath felt like I was afraid she would never like it. I can admit when I am a worry wort and I know I am. It took her about a week to get used to the bath but now she absolutely love it and the sound of her kicking the water, making a huge mess makes my heart swell.

I did take pictures of her in the brace and I took some photos of her after they were off. I know that while it was a traumatizing thing for me to go through, it did not faze her at all and in the long run, it was the best thing that could have happened. We are so happy that our pediatrician caught it when he did. If he hadn’t, it would have taken even longer to fix it and it would have been even more difficult to fix. Now, we have to monitor her hip with X-rays until she is 8 years old and it scares me so much that she might dislocate it again but I know I cannot live in fear. I know that I need to just live in the moment, and love her, and enjoy her. I have to have faith that everything will work out the way it was meant to and not worry too much. Words to live by…..

Signed,

Worry Wort…

Have you ever thought about how newborn photos would look like in black and white? I don’t often do black and white conversions in my clients’ galleries unless I feel it calls for it, as not every photo would look good converted to black and white. A photo has to have enough depth and different varying shades of light and dark shadows or it will just look flat. To me, a black and white version of a photo tells a totally different story. A photo in color is beautiful and gorgeous and we see everything in color so it is naturally what I am drawn to. However, when that photo is converted to black and white, I feel that it is so different in so many ways.

Newborn photography is all about emotion for me. The entire process is an emotional journey. I create these portraits for all my clients, individually selecting the fabrics, props, and colors after finding out their likes and dislikes. So when I take a photo and it turns out how I envisioned in my head, it is an incredible feeling. I sometimes feel that when I change that particular photo to black and white, I am creating a whole other piece of art as it creates a very different kind of emotion when you look at it.

Classic, timeless, emotive, beauty, all words that come to mind when I design a newborn session. Do you think you could pick? Which would you rather have? The color or the black and white version?

When you look at the newborn photos below, which do you think is better? Which ones make you pause, take a second look?

We finally had a HUGE snow day after such a weird and warm winter. Although I did love having a warm winter to go out strolling after big dinners during the holidays, I was secretly wishing for snow on Christmas Day. How does a massive snow storm drum up such sentimental thoughts like hope for my children? Growing up in Singapore, it was always 80-100 degrees all year round so I never got to play in the snow as a kid. Something that a lot of people take for granted. So when we do get it, I love snow. I love the fact that my children will get to experience it like I never did when I was little. Sledding, falling down in the snow and laying there, knowing it will be difficult to get up but it will be so much fun to try. Eating snow, the delicious feeling of it melting on your tongue and knowing that it just came from the sky. It all seems so magical.

I became part of a blog circle this month and it was the perfect time to use it to force myself to take my camera out more. I had to capture my boys playing in the first snow of the season. I wanted to capture their innocence, their love of life, their pure joy at something so simple. It was so much fun watching them appreciate the snow and when they came in all cold and tired, they had a warm cup of hot chocolate waiting for them. I hope that they will remember the feel of the snow melting on their tongue. I hope that they will remember their excitement of waking up in the morning and seeing the blanket of white snow, squealing in delight because they know they will get to go play in it. I hope they will remember the pure joy and exhilaration of jumping on a sled and flying down a small hill. I hope that these memories are the ones that they will recall when they are all grown up, and they see the first snow flake hit the ground…..

  • Christine D - I grew up in the tropics too. While I am certainly a warm weather lover, living with four distinct seasons now has taught me that winter is a good time for reflection. When it is warm outside, we go outside and open doors and windows. When it is cold and snowy, we cuddle up and stay inside and can’t help but think about our lives. I am happy that inspired you to get your camera out and document your children. They will be grown so quickly. You always take such beautiful newborn and family portraits for other people; it is time to document some of your own memories!ReplyCancel

  • Brenden - I think its so important as a photographer to slow down and capture some of your own moneys. I love these lifestyle portraits of your family. • Jennifer Rittenberry - Love that you shared a personal post with us this week. You are so right about certain areas of the world taking for granted having all four seasons and enjoying the different weather that each one brings. It looks like your children had a wonderful time playing in the snow and am sure that will be one of their fondest childhood memories as they look back as adults.ReplyCancel

  • Samantha - I love these adorable photos of these children having a blast in the snow! What a perfect day for a shoot like this as the sun is shining down in these smiling faces. The hot cocoa pictures…post snow fun are just so precious and sweet!ReplyCancel

  • Jennifer - This is an amazing experience for them, and a great capture of memories for you all. As a true Floridian born and raised I have never seen snow. I don’t feel I am missing out because I have yet to see it, but after reading your amazing blog I sure do feel I need to make a special trip, if not for me then for my 3 children. To capture amazing child hood memories as you have done with our family. These are beautiful, cold yet such a warm tone to the images. You are one amazing children’s photographer.ReplyCancel

  • Deanna - These snow day images are so sweet! I love that you shared a little about how you grew up and why snow is so important to you. How easy is it to photograph your OWN newborn? I am sure if you are a parent or a professional newborn photographer or both, you will have asked yourself this question as soon as you found out you were pregnant. Should I photograph my OWN newborn? After giving birth to a 8lb 13 oz baby, having been through a 12 hour birthing experience, albeit with an epidural, and having a second degree tear with stitches you know where…. Oh, it was tough.  So, NOT easy.

If you are a newborn photographer yourself, you will probably think, I can do my own kid’s newborn session! I’ve already photographed hundreds of newborns! Mine will be no different. I admit, some babies may be easy and you may be able to get your baby to cooperate but mine was so not cooperative. I was so glad I hired a newborn photographer for my baby Ella because I would have been so much more stressed out if I had to totally rely on my own expertise.

Every time I took baby Ella into the studio to photograph her, no matter how tired she was or how full she was, she would wake up and want to play with me! She wasn’t fussy, she just smelled me and wanted to stay up and play! Thank god she was cute! Haha! Also, thank goodness we already had a newborn photographer lined up to take her photos or I would be so SOL!

Another thing you have to consider is, who is going to do your family portraits? I sure as heck could not teach my husband the right angles, how to pose me, and also how in the world would I be able to get my other two boys to look into the camera? If I didn’t hire someone else to do her newborn session, we would not have these beautiful family portraits of our family that I treasure so much! You only have a very short window to get these portraits done and when the baby is past 14 days old, it may be a lot harder to get them sleepy and curled up like the ones you see here done by Redhead Photography. I am so grateful to her for these photos.

Now I said it wasn’t easy to photograph your own newborn but I didn’t say it was impossible. I did manage to get her into a few setups but I had to do only one setup a day as she would wakeup and want to play or I would be too tired and hurting from recovery. So by the time I was done doing everything, she was already 4 weeks old and was not as curly or as tiny anymore.

So the bottom line is, if you really want to have these precious moments of your own newborn documented, I really encourage you to consider hiring someone else to do them as you will not get a second chance. I sure am glad I did….
